“Intermediate filaments” is actually a generic name for a family of proteins (grouped into 6 classes based on sequence and biochemical structure) that serve similar functions in protecting and shaping the cell or its components. Interestingly, they can even be found inside the nucleus. As we just stated, intermediate filaments are cytoskeletal components of cells that are mid-sized of the three cytoskeletal fibers. Think of them as the small pickup truck of these fibers.

The schematics illustrate the specific impact of keratin, shown as purple filaments (top panels) and vimentin, shown as orange filaments (lower panels) on adhesive cell structures such as desmosomes, hemi-desmosomes, focal adhesions, in membrane protrusion during cell migration. 2015-02-01 · The fibrous intermediate filament (IF) proteins constitute the nuclear lamina network as well as a 10-nm-diameter filament system in the cytoplasm of metazoan cells [ 1 ]. Supposedly, they all originate from a common ancestor, most probably a kind of a ‘primordial nuclear lamin’ [ 2 ]. Intermediate filament (IF) proteins and heat shock proteins (HSPs) are large multimember families that share several features, including protein abundance, significant upregulation in response to a variety of stresses, cytoprotective functions, and the phenocopying of several human diseases after IF protein or HSP mutation. Intermediate filaments (IFs) are a type of cytoskeletal fiber found in many eukaryotic cells; they're also believed to be found in fungi and other single-celled eukaryotes, but that has not been fully accepted by scientists. Intermediate filaments have long been considered mechanical components of the cell that provide resistance to deformation stress.

This is made possible by extensive interactions between the constituent protofilaments of an intermediate filament , which enhance its resistance to compression, twisting, stretching and bending forces. The intermediate filaments are formed by ropelike polymers, which are made up of fibrous proteins. Subclasses of intermediate filaments Intermediate filaments are made of several strands of fibrous proteins that are wound together (Figure). These elements of the cytoskeleton get their name from the fact that their diameter, 8 to 10 nm, is between those of microfilaments and microtubules. Intermediate filaments consist of several intertwined strands of fibrous proteins. In general, intermediate filaments serve as structural elements, helping cells maintain their shape and integrity.

IFs Summary (LODISH BK. M.B) The association of intermediate filaments with the nuclear and plasma membranes suggests that their principal function is structural. In epithelium, for instance, intermediate filaments provide mechanical support for the plasma membrane where it comes into contact with other cells or with the extracellular matrix. As we just stated, intermediate filaments are cytoskeletal components of cells that are mid-sized of the three cytoskeletal fibers. Think of them as the small pickup truck of these fibers. Intermediate filaments (IFs) are major constituents of the cytoskeleton and nuclear boundary in animal cells. They are of prime importance for the functional organization of structural elements.
