Quantitative MRI analysis, in the form of delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC) relies on the relationship between the highly negatively charged glycosaminoglycans (GAG) and the negatively charged MRI contrast agent gadolinium, providing a measure of quality of the cartilaginous tissue, specifically with regard to GAG content. 22 In OA, the highly negatively charged GAG are lost and when intravenously injected, the MRI contrast agent gadolinium dGEMRIC (delayed Gadolinium Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Image of Cartilage) is a well-established technique for cartilage quality assessment in osteoarthritis at clinical field strengths. The method is robust, but requires injection of contrast agent and a cumbersome examination procedure.
